I completely agree (and FFmpeg developers would of course welcome this) but it is unfortunately impossible / unlikely: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=803868 There is no vlc release that works with FFmpeg 3.0 (and I am sure you want vlc in Ubuntu).
