Public bug reported:

Just testing Ubuntu GNOME Xenial 20160218 amd64 and I found that
selected the check disc for defects option from the advanced boot menu
displays no text. I'd guess from the hard drive and optical drive
activity lights that the test is running but no text is displayed. Once
the activity lights stop you can hit enter and reboot just as though the
test had completed and displayed the results prompting to reboot.

I also tested Ubuntu 20160218 amd64 and it works as expected so I guess
this is Ubuntu GNOME specific.
