I'm wondering if I'm seeing the same thing.... I did a fresh install of gutsy a few days ago, and X was not correctly configured first off. I managed to change it using displayconfig-gtk, but now alhtough my user (main user) is right, all other users and the gdm will use that resolution but give me a virtual desktop (if thats the correct term) where although the desktop is 1440x900, the screen runs at around 1024x768 (my guess) and pans to show the rest.
