For some reason this bug fixed itself on it's own. I was about to burn
an ISO to upgrade the BIOS (which apparently working in wine, so no need
to have a windows machine).   I left the laptop run out of batteries and
then it stayed without power for a few days. The next time I booted it
up, the wifi was working out of the box ! I'm not sure what happenned
but maybe the BIOS got reset or something.
