I've also seen this (on Debian Iceweasel) - and hadn't figured out that it was the proxy; looking through the Mozilla bugzilla there seem to be a lot of proxy related hangs:

Do you use a PAC file or specify the proxy directly? IMHO this is a major problem in office situations.
