After upgrading bios and turning on modem, sound now works (not sure if upgrading the bios helped).
My thinkpad came shipped with the modem turned off. I will never ever use the modem. I still think its a bug that ubuntu can't startup sound if the modem is turned off (snd-hda-intel is loaded, it just for some odd reason fails to work).
