I have been running 12.04 LTS i386 (the precise kernel series) for years
in this hp xw8400 workstation without any such problem (including
VirtualBox).

I have been running 12.04 LTS amd64 and 14.04 LTS, both i386 and amd64
(the precise kernel series) less frequently for years in this hp xw8400
workstation without any such problem (including VirtualBox, I used an
amd64 system as host for amd64 guest systems in VirtualBox.)

I will try to boot from live USB drives.

- What iso files do you want me to clone into boot drives?

- And what tasks do you want me to perform in the live systems?
