Nice idea the one with the autobrightness. Unfortunately, it doesn't
make a difference. That the problem is some kind of (almost regular)
race condition could be very probable. I just had one single occasion
when the screen, well, still stayed black after removing the phone from
my ear but stayed alight after pressing the hardware lock button. So I
could hang up "like a normal person". The phone call before that and
after that, though, still had the screen turn back black immediately
after pressing the hardware lock screen and going alight for half a
second.

Same as before. But I'll keep my autobrightness turned off for now and
observe if anything is different than before. Doesn't look very probable
though.

I'm not using and have never used any screen protector. Instead I have
my phone protected in a FREITAG phone sleeve [1], but clearly I need to
take it out before answering or placing a phone call.
