I later did a reinstall of ubuntu on a newish SD card and got the same error. It works but wait ten mutes powered down and then it does not. I had uefi on because I want uefi on to work with windows which is required.
On the other hand, I use windows so rarely now, I could switch the bios to uefi manually when I need to boot windows. Can grub run windows without uefi? It was working fine before.
