Some more log files I got experimenting. Here's a kern.log excerpt for a successful (i.e. intended behaviour, no visible bug reproduction) connection of the device (I included every line from the relevant time period because I'm not 100% sure which are relevant):

unplugging the device in the hope of capturing some log output for the panic. What happened is that the "usb 3-1.2: reset high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-pci" (IIRC, I have to do this from memory for obvious reasons) messages appeared around every 0.2s (as deduced from their timestamps), with no other messages appearing until I unplugged the device. Then I got a huge spam of error messages going much too fast to determine their content (although I think from the general shape that there were stacktraces in there, among other things). Here's the final screenful that was left on screen at the time of the panic (I copied this down on paper and then retyped it into here, so there may be transcription errors, and I left out the timestamps): [<ffffffff8136920f>] common_perm+0x8f/0x100 drm [<ffffffff813692e1>] apparmor_inode_getattr+0x41/0x60 ahci [<ffffffff81326901>] security_inode_getattr+0x41/0x60 libahci [<ffffffff81202867>] vfs_getattr+0x17/0x30 r8169 [<ffffffff812029b8>] vfs_fstatat+0x78/0xc0 mii [<ffffffff810a6220>] ? wake_up_q+0x70/0x70 umii [<ffffffff81202f71>] SYSC_newlstat+0x31/0x60 video [<ffffffff810fbfe1>] ?
