Still seeing this on 4.4.0-12, will test the latest v4.5 kernel next. attaching journalctl from 2 tests: one unplugging the external monitor, and one plugging it in. both failed in the same apparent way -- unrecoverable black screen (although when holding the power button down, the plymouth splash showed up until the system powered off)
