I edited config.mk in the awesome directory so that the include and
libs lines look like:
# includes and libs
INCS = -I. -I/usr/include -I${X11INC}
LIBS = -L/usr/lib -lc -L${X11LIB} -lX11 -lconfig -lXext -lXrandr -lXinerama
And then ran make and make install.
