Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 14.04 -16.04 Ubuntu GNOME, the lock screen will be
broken with an "Authenticating" message.

This is due to gnome-shell loosing the authentication channel to gdm,
after the upgrade. I am not sure that there is anyway to work around
this and restore it without rebooting.
