digger: The upgrade should have left your earlier kernels in the grub menu - does falling back to those help? Also, dmesg output would be useful (if possible - don't know if dmesg is included in the initramfs), alternatively booting without the 'splash' and 'quiet' kernel command line options might yield some information.
