Going to edgy seems to have solved it, the computer no longer hangs, even though the ieee1394 drive stops answering after a couple of minutes and doesn't recover. Working thru the usb interface I see no offlines or disconnects, so it isn't all solved yet - or maybe it is the pc ieee1394 adapter, or the enclosure, that are defective.
