Thanks. So I've never run anything before Ubuntu 16.04 on this laptop, so no, it's not an upgrade that's broken it.
I installed linux-image-4.6.0-040600rc4-generic, ran Gnome-Shell and plugged in the external monitor, while watching syslog.
