Attaching to the leftover process with strace, there are millions of
messages of the form

(No such file or directory)
access("/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.en_ZA", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/home/stefan/.gtk-2.0/2.10.0/i486-pc-linux-gnu/engines/libclearlooks.so",
F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/home/stefan/.gtk-2.0/2.10.0/i486-pc-linux-gnu/engines/libclearlooks.la",

Almost looks like it keeps trying to refresh the theme directory.
