I think this issue might also be device-specific. I tried
`lubuntu-16.04-desktop-i386.iso` in Virtualbox and "check disc for
defects" worked normally. On older laptop I only got blue screen.

I noticed that at one point when I pressed some arrow key with intention
of getting out of the splash and see console, the laptop rebooted and
when I went to check disc for defects again and pressed arrow key, I
started seeing the actual check on console and it finished with no
detected defects (like Virtualbox earlier).
