I have similar experiences since I upgraded from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04. I can no longer suspend or hibernate, the screen goes black but the PC stays on, heating up and triggering the fan after a while.
When I run Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.2.0-35-generic (which was still installed) instead of kernel 4.4.0-21-generic, the problem does not occur, so I've uninstalled 4.4.0-21-generic for now until there's a better solution. I have no kernel versions in between available in my package manager.
