1. @eiro tried systemctl enable mysql.service
then sudo service mysql start and problem is same as before
then opened mysql workbench 6.3
it shows server is stopped so i clicked start server and the response is
Unhandled exception: TextBox_append_text_with_encoding() takes exactly 3 
arguments (4 given) so maybe mysqlworkbench also needs an update - it was 
working perfectly up to now

2. @rick removed my.cnf (mysqld.cnf doesnt exist)
sudo update
sudo upgrade
same error as before
"mysql-server depends in mysql-server-5.7 however mysql-server 5-7 is not yet 
configured"

anyway, no sweat, i have mysql server57 running in a virtual win7 machine and 
am back programming. I lost a lot of time over it so i'll wait until next 
weekend and remove mysql completely and do a clean install
