Thanks for the clarification, psusi. After aborting the incomplete installation procedure, upon reboot 16.04 booted just fine and the only other O/S on my SSD was Windows 7, all of which is perfectly accessible now, even with an EFI mode installation (that could have been BIOS mode instead).
