I also found that after purging and reinstalling mysql-server, it still didn't 
work.
On clean install, mysqld looks for /etc/mysql/conf.d. If that dir isn't there, 
it exits.
I simply had to "sudo mkdir /etc/mysql/conf.d" yesterday, and "sudo aptitude 
upgrade" after that, and mysql starts installing ok again.
There are definitely problems with mysql apt package. :(
