Octave uses OpenGL for plotting by default. If your remote display
forwarding does not support OpenGL plotting, then this will naturally
fail.

Using the gnuplot interface to plot is a useful workaround for buggy
video cards, headless operation, or remote sessions like this. Use the
command

    graphics_toolkit gnuplot

to use gnuplot in Octave.
