This is the same issue for me to.. I am using Lubuntu 16.04 LTS.. I do
have a workaround which does work

One workaround until a fix is released seems to be to hit Ctrl+Alt+F1
then Ctrl+Alt+F7.

A Debian user reported that running xset dpms force off and then hitting
a key also worked.
