It seems I jumped the gun. I still encounter this problem on software update (rather than system startup). I've removed and reinstalled Virtualbox and still encounter the error.
I do have a question re the packaging of virtualbox and virtualbox-qt. For both I have installed version 5.0.18-dfsg-2build1.
