It seemed to be related to compiz because the "direct rendering: no" message was not appearing until after compiz was started then stopped again. From your explanation, what seems to be happening is that compiz switches the video over to AIGLX when it is started, but it is is not restored to normal direct rendering once compiz is closed. Does AIGLX provide equivalent performance to direct rendering?
