Public bug reported:

This is most probably a once-in-a-million-years bug, it has just
happened now and I had never seen this before; but it's so huge that it
must be investigated and fixed. Don't tell me you can't reproduce, I
know that.

At home I usually connect an external keyboard, mouse and screen to my
laptop, using it as a desktop computer. Every once in a while I unplug
everything and take the laptop to another room and keep using it,
without suspending or shutting down.

I just did that and the touchpad has stopped working. I have no mouse
right now. Since I don't know how to access the system menu with the
keyboard only (if that's possible at all), I will launch a terminal with
Ctrl-Alt-T and restart the system by typing "reboot".
