For the record, if GRUB is setup to boot in text mode (so that the
graphical desktop does not come up), the keyboard is not working either:
the system books all the way to a tty prompt, then, despite the cursor
blinking the whole time (never stops blinking, like it does after a few
seconds for the graphical password prompt), one cannot type in the
username.
