ifmetric return exit status 1 and "Interface 'pppoe-provider' not existent" 
message
if I configure PPPoE via /etc/network/interfaces like this:

auto eth2
# no ip address
iface eth2 inet manual
#
auto pppoe-provider
iface pppoe-provider inet ppp
        metric 50
        pre-up /sbin/ip link set dev eth2 up
        provider pppoe-provider
