Public bug reported:

volumecontrol in miniapplet 1.12.1 freeze up and stops working.. i can
move the volume control to max or min but it will not have any effect on
sound, and none of the programs its supposed to be able to control will
react when clicking on it trough the volume control app. seems to happen
randomly after the computer has been on for a day or so. i have to
remove the miniapplet from the panel, re-add it and reboot to get it
working again. if i dont reboot i just have a "dead square" there.

not sure what cause this, but i have tried to reinstall all the packages
etc, but the same problem happens, and this has been with me since i
installed it.

the sound comes out from my motherboard, type Gigabyte GA-790XTA ..
other than that, a 955 AMD X4 3.2ghz processor, 8 gb DDR3-1600mhz RAM,
ATI radeon 5870 running stock open source drivers.

** Affects: mate-indicator-applet (Ubuntu)
