I used that solution for months, but eventually became sick of it and
stopped using my Ubuntu phone because of this bug. It may be operator
dependant, but I required an activate code each time I turned on my
phone or turned off flight mode. It seems that (at least with my
operator, Sonera Finland) that the phone sends a deactivate callerID by
default when initially connecting to the GSM network.

A temporary fix for this could be to update the OS so that callerID is
activated and sent by default. I've read, though, that some people claim
that CallerID is apparently activated by default, but this doesn't seem
to be the case when used with my local operator.
