I used that solution for months, but eventually became sick of it and stopped using my Ubuntu phone because of this bug. It may be operator dependant, but I required an activate code each time I turned on my phone or turned off flight mode. It seems that (at least with my operator, Sonera Finland) that the phone sends a deactivate callerID by default when initially connecting to the GSM network.
A temporary fix for this could be to update the OS so that callerID is activated and sent by default.
