@William #27. It is a virtual machine on VMWare with Plesk 12.5 installed. I checked the /etc/pam.d folder and found a custom plesk librarie:
auth sufficient pam_plesk.so try_first_pass Thus far all the machines with Cron daemon problems were Ubuntu 12.04 machines in combination with Plesk.
