Faced the same issue with Sony PHA-3 after the update from 14.04 to 16.04. Solved by removing fwupd. It is also worth to note that my second USB DAC, Dr. DAC Nano, works flawlessly even with fwupd installed. However, Sony PHA-3 does not.
