I seem to have found a fix. There are no 386 packages installed as given
by:

dpkg --get-selections | grep i386

nothing

aptitude search ~ri386

nothing

dpkg -l | grep :i386

nothing

However, editing /var/lib/dpkg/arch and removing i386 (leaving just
amd64) allows my upgrade to move forward without issue.
