Thanks to Marcos Lucas for solution #21, which worked for me.  Leaving
the output / input devices set to "default" causes the problem.
Explicitly changing to the actual devices, in my case:

HDA Intel PCH: ALC892 Analog (hw:0,0) / HDA Intel PCH: ALC892 Alt Analog
(hw:0,2): line:0

makes everything just dandy again.

re:  Audacity 2.0.5 and Linux Mint 17.3 MATE

The "default" setting DID work in Audacity 2.0.0 running under Linux
Mint 13 MATE.
