Same problem here with Thinkpad T43 and up-to-date Gutsy. Brightness Applet with the red circle and the message ''Cannot get laptop panel brightness'',see screenshot. I have no sliders in g-p-m for the brightness,see screenshot. And the ''on screen display'' don't work anymore. This all worked a few days ago! When I restart hal everything works.
