There's still no "back" or "cancel" button while the dialog "processing purchase" is on the screen. This time, swiping from the right worked.
I entered my paypal details and finished the purchase. It took me back to the app screen, which still showed the green buy button with the price. Out of curiosity I tapped on it and it took me to restart the purchasing process: I cancelled it (would need to find out what would happen if I entered my details again) and it took me back to the app screen. This time the button said "in progress" but eventually it failed - the payment appears as authorised (I guess it's in the 15 minutes window for refunds).
