files to /var/lib/mysql, causing the next attempt to reinstall MySQL to

MariaDB and MySQL have in the past worked as drop-in replacements, but
this is no longer the case, so going from one server to the other with
the same data files isn't supported.

Try renaming /etc/mysql and /var/lib/mysql, then reinstall MySQL
