Ross, I would suggest to open a new bug report (run "ubuntu-bug os- prober"). Although the resulting symptoms (error messages) are the same, it is caused by a different case. Which needs more info to avoid. The snippet above does not work in the general case. Which means to avoid it automatically this needs more info about what to avoid.
