It happens intermittently. Some times after a kernel upgrade it boots
fine, but immediately after the screensaver turns on the screen gets
black with the backlight on.

The system is working while the black screen is on. I am able to log in
and shutdown via console (blindly)

I have tried to write dmesg to a file while it is in this mode and I got
