Public bug reported:

Tried to configure 5.1 surround on my Ubuntu system and I was
unsuccessful after reading about 20 articles and 10 videos. I reached
out to the #alsa channel and was fortunate enough to run across a very
Knowledgeable user by the Debianuser. After several attempts in changing
files the system sounds clear and all audio test work perfectly. I
couldn't load the hda jack reset app on my system not sure if it had to
do with my release 12.04.5 but we ended up inputting the data manually.
\

Here are some lines of data we used plus some conversation notes:
[codec]
0x14f150a1 0x10280581 2
[pincfg]
0x1b 0x01014011
0x1c 0x01014010
0x1d 0x01014012
[hint]
multi_io = yes

 Well, it basically works. Now there're two more things we can do.
<Marine1> Thank you if your ever here in Sunny Florida i owe you dinner, drinks?
<debianuser> First - multi_io on its own did not worked, but pincfg worked. We
can try to combine those two like this: http://pastebin.com/aj29uStC It won't
make things better, may do nothing or add one more option. So it's up to you if
you want to test that or not.
<Marine1> yes I’m game
 let me know
You can do that from command-line:
   echo -e '[codec]\n0x14f150a1 0x10280581 2\n\n[hint]\nmulti_io = yes' | sudo
tee /lib/firmware/my-multi-io.fw

Than you..
