Same issue on HP/Compaq nc6320 with Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (after lock screen
or suspend)
Intel 945GM/GMS/GME Integrated Graphics Controller
CRTL-ALT-F1 and CTRL-ALT-F7 solves problem as describer by others. What
also works is to open multiple screens (random) including a terminal
screen and close this via a CRTL-D.
