It might be helpful if the error message said -

$ sudo do-release-upgrade
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found - Next release expected to be available on 2016-06-28.

The meta file cold have an entry for the next release in the schedule.
This would save a lot of people a lot of time and trouble. I think I
shall post this as a separate feature request.
