It might be helpful if the error message said - $ sudo do-release-upgrade Checking for a new Ubuntu release No new release found - Next release expected to be available on 2016-06-28.
The meta file cold have an entry for the next release in the schedule. This would save a lot of people a lot of time and trouble. I think I shall post this as a separate feature request.
