Forgot to address the first question -- my access point at home is a
Linux 2.4 PC with a Orinoco/WaveLAN 128-bit WEP card (802.11b).

Here is the common crash case that I was referring to earlier. The crash
starts, apparently, with the failure with command #07. This often
displays also on shutdown (and seems in some cases to halt shutdown).
