Sounds like you have an issue unrelated to this bug. See

that with full details.

In short, yes. If you don't have a customised configuration, then the
upgrade should switch to the latest configuration automatically. If you
have a locally customised configuration, then you will end up with a
/etc/mysql/my.cnf.migrated file active containing your previous
configuration with those two options renamed. It is not necessary to
make any further changes, but I advise following "Workaround Option 3/3"
anyway to put you in the best place for future upgrades.
