I have a similar issue (though sound never works from speakers). Laptop: Dell precision 5510 delivered with Ubuntu 14.04 (sound working). After upgrading to 16.04 there is no sound from internal speakers but sound from headphones working. The internal speakers does no work no matter if I suspen/resume or do a cold boot (with or without headphones plugged in).
