The patch in comment #53 works for me too, meaning that the desktop remains visible after power cycling my receiver. However, the MythTV frontend disappears (but the process is still running, according to ps). mythfrontend.log doesn't provide any clues as to what is happening at the time the receiver is turned off, either. I guess I could upgrade to Mythbuntu 16.04 but I'm expecting to encounter new problems then, such as no more 32-bit Chrome.
