jmg: I fix the issue manually by installing and configuring X, then I run
ubiquity and get a working system.

casper
I do:
aptitude install fglrx-driver
Then I edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace vesa with fglrx. Now
/etc/init.d/gdm restart let's me continue the installation.
