Public bug reported:

Preamble: I describe a few things, I watched, when trying to install.
Maybe this has to be split in diffent bug reports / enhancement
requests.

0. Enhancement request: A little more documentation about the
installation should be on the CD. Not everybody is allways connected to
the internet

1. First I tried to install with default options, but the selection of a legacy
NIC was impossible.
   Maybe this could be changed.

So i tried to install in expert mode and was able to select my NIC. :)

2. Boot options:
If the hardware detection says, there is no ACPI and the user says: Please,
dont't try to use PCMCIA, that freeze my machine, there should be a possibility
to add this to the boot options of GRUB.

3. The logic of harddisk detection/Partitioning/LVM and possible RAID is
confusing to me.
a: Formating starts useless and without message, so first time after 5 minutes
without optical feedback I rebooted.
b: if you choose guided patitioning, and then multiple partitions, in some
cases the root partition is too small, while 190 GB home partition are
oversized. So the program claims GRUB cannot be installed (you see no
diskspace, If you know you you can open console 2 and enter commands)
If you then try to go back and do a manual partitioning, it always try to
install GRUB. It is impossible to go back.
I think, if there was an Error, it should be possible to go back to any earlier
point of the istallation steps.
c: If you try to use LVM, and say lvcreate the lv will be formated and if you
later all lv will be formated. Here I am not really shure, because I try to
install since 24 hours in different variations.
d: if there is valid LVM, you get sometimes errors and cannot continue.

I think the partitioning complex should look in the following way:
First select if the user wish the optional features RAID and/or LVM.
The let the user decide the size of the partitions, but give him some clues
like: we need usual xGB in root yMB in usr ...
and if everything looks ok, create MD, VG, LV and format them

4: the standard error message: one part of the installation failed... is not
really helpfull,
while the output on console 4 is spammed by dhcplease...
On my old CRT the thin white letters on some orange background are nearly
unreadable.

Frank
