after rebooting my pi3 board this morning after it got the auto-upgrade
to the latest ubuntu-core i noticed that my serial console is filled
with a multi page mess of control chars:

i also seem to have no login ability at the console anymore and need to resort
to the existing ssh connection via the configured wlan device.
